NFP groups respond to refugee resettlement deal

NFP groups have welcomed the Australian Government’s refugee resettlement deal with the United States but still have some concerns.

Oxfam Australia’s Humanitarian Policy Advisor Dr Nicole Bieske said,“The announcement from the government  to resettle people from Nauru must bring to an end Australia’s damaging offshore processing regime.”

“Oxfam is concerned that the agreement does not end the interminable limbo for all people on Manus Island and Nauru,” said Bieske.

“Australia has an obligation to the refugees and asylum seekers on Manus Island and Nauru and must bring to Australia anyone not covered by the agreement with the United States.

“Many of these people have been in offshore detention for several years and have experienced severe psychological damage as a result of the policies of the Australian Government.”

UNICEF Australia has welcomed the announcement.

UNICEF Australia CEO Tony Stuart said, “The chance to resettle in the US will, at long last, give refugee children on Nauru the chance to start a new life in safety and for their families to recover and rebuild.”

“Over fifteen years we have learned that offshore processing is not safe for children, or sustainable. The Australian Government has negotiated through great complexity to deliver a positive arrangement which will have real and rapid outcomes for some of the world’s most vulnerable children,” he said.
