The Banksia Project has appointed its first Chief Executive Officer, Peter Seligman to drive the growth of the mental health not-for-profit as it expands nationally to help even more Australian men on their journey towards mental wellness.

Offering free programs to support men in the early intervention of mental health since its inception in 2015, The Banksia Project has grown significantly. This year it launched a virtual service during the pandemic in an effort to reach even more men in need.

The Banksia Project saidit appointed Mr. Seligman due to his extensive experience and understanding of the clinical and mental health sector. His previous role as executive manager of clinical practice and outcomes with Relationship Matters, a Melbourne-based mental health NGO, saw him deliver essential clinical services. This incuded state and federally funded programs and funding opportunities.

The Banksia Project chairman Paul Harapin said this was an exciting step for the organisation to allocate more time and resources to drive awareness of its free programs around the country, both in regional and urban locations.

“It’s been a challenging year, with suicide rates amongst men the highest on record in 2019 according to Australian Bureau of Statistics. As an organisation, it’s our focus to support men  in the early intervention stages of mental health and it’s the passion and experience of people like Peter who will take us to the next level,” Harapin said.

As part of its steady growth, The Banksia Project also welcomed two additional board members, NSW Chairman and Head of Asia & International Markets for KPMG Australia, Doug Ferguson and Chief Financial Officer at Right2Drive, Tim Warren. Both executives are passionate about the mental health space, volunteering their time to help expand The Banksia Project’s services and impact on the community.

Ferguson said he was looking forward to helping build a stronger foundation for The Banksia Project.

“It’s never been more important to support men and the wider community with their mental health. The Banksia Project is a passionate community which aligns with my personal and professional values, so it’s a privilege to be part of a movement which supports men to gain or regain the confidence and skill set to overcome life’s challenges,” Ferguson said.

The Banksia Project is running its free programs virtually and as meet-ups where possible. It is available to all men across Australia.
