Not-for-profit (NFP) recruitment specialist Windsor Recruitment has released results of a survey entitled Nonprofit Board Attitudes and Effectiveness.

The typical participant in the survey was male, aged between 45 and 64 years, and employed on a full-time permanent basis.

The majority of participants had served on NFP boards for more than five years, but had been on their current board for less than four years. Most participants spent less than 10 hours per month serving on their board, and 72 per cent reported a direct personal financial cost, $112 per month on average, from board involvement.

There were high levels reported of identification and satisfaction with their organisation. Participants mostly agreed with statements such as ‘The organisation’s successes are my successes’, and ‘I am satisfied with the board on which I serve.’ No participants indicated any definite intention to leave their board.

The majority expressed a sense of belonging to the board and a high degree of alignment between personal goals and those of the NFP, with 85 per cent agreeing or strongly agreeing with the statement ‘The goals of this organisation match my own goals.’ Furthermore, results indicated that participants’ boards were positively influenced by organisation and structural change, shown by general agreement with the statement ‘From my perspective, changes to the board have been for the better.’
