SA Libs promise violence shelters

Opposition Leader Steven Marshall says $1.5 million will be spent on a new 20-bed facility in southern Adelaide and $2.5 million on two 10-bed facilities in regional SA, if the Liberals win the March 17 election.

Another $5 million in loans will be made available to other not-for-profit accommodation providers to allow them to expand their operations.

“Currently, there is a critical shortage of suitable accommodation for women and children fleeing dangerous situations in their homes,” Marshall said on Wednesday.

“Every hour three domestic violence incidents are reported in South Australia, that’s 69 a day or 480 a week which amounts to 25,000 during the course of this year.”

Marshall said the Liberals would deliver a comprehensive policy to deal more broadly with domestic violence ahead of polling day.

“This tsunami of violence must be stopped and the devastating impact it has upon women and children addressed,” he said.

National domestic violence helpline: 1800 737 732 or 1800RESPECT. In an emergency call triple-zero.
