Gold Coast rallies against domestic violence

On average, one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner, with intimate partner violence being one of the leading contributors to illness, disability and premature death for women aged 15-44.

In support of Domestic Violence Prevention Month from May 1-31, local Gold Coast businesses will be joining the movement against DV by spreading awareness on the issue and hosting several charity events to raise funds for not-for-profit organisation, RizeUp Australia.

Violence against women is estimated to cost the Australian economy more than $22 billion each yeariii, making these donations vital in providing women and their children much-needed support.

CEO and Founder of RizeUp Australia, Nicolle Edwards, said conversations around domestic violence need to be more open so the community can understand the issues and learn how they can best aid those affected.

“Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month gives us the opportunity to raise awareness of such an important topic and demonstrate the gravity of the situations these women and their children are faced with,” said Edwards.

“Our one, over-arching goal is to eradicate domestic and family violence through practical support and education. We believe that everyone in the community can contribute and care for others in vital need and ultimately play a part in changing the ending for these vulnerable families.”

Established in 2015, RizeUp seeks to drive awareness of domestic violence within society, while working with front-line agencies, refuge and specialist domestic violence services to deliver life- changing and practical support. The provision of safe, welcoming and practical homes gives the families affected the hope, empowerment and ability to move on to a life free from violence.

In honour of Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, several fundraising events will be held on the Gold Coast, where RizeUp was originally conceptualised and founded.

“It’s truly magical and quite remarkable to see the local community back the cause and rally with RizeUp, having been founded on the Gold Coast just four years ago,” said Edwards.

“We’re beyond grateful to have various businesses across not only the Gold Coast, but also in Brisbane and the wider Queensland community supporting RizeUp’s initiative to wholeheartedly support survivors of domestic and family violence.”

Events held on the Gold Coast this month include several pamper days by The French Beauty Academy and an exclusive Gallery Showing Fundraiser by Glass Xpressions.

Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month is an annual event held in May to raise community awareness of the social and personal impacts of domestic and family violence and to educate individuals on how to deliver or seek support for themselves or those affected.
