Four Australian organisations have been named as inaugural members of the Twitter Trust & Safety Council.

Bravehearts, beyondblue, Project Rockit and Reachout were the Australian groups chosen to help deal with harassment and cyberbullying on the social media network.

“With hundreds of millions of Tweets sent per day, the volume of content on Twitter is massive, which makes it extraordinarily complex to strike the right balance between fighting abuse and speaking truth to power,” said Patricia Cartes, Head of Global Policy Outreach at Twitter.

“It requires a multi-layered approach where each of our 320 million users has a part to play, as do the community of experts working for safety and free expression.”

Beyondblue took to the social media platform to voice excitement about the new initiative.

“We’re proud to be a member and provide insights to ensure everyone feels safe sharing their experiences on twitter,” the group said.

Project Rockit CEO Rosie Thomas told the ABC she hoped the Trust & Safety Council’s advice would result in Twitter offering a better service.

“We know they’ve really put their hand up and said ‘we do need help’,” she said.

Speaking about the Australian and New Zealand organisations that have joined the council, Twitter’s Director of Public Policy, Australia and New Zealand Julie Inman Grant said: “We believe that the development of the Council and the inclusion of such strong local NGOs means a win-win for Twitter, our users and the organisations involved.”
