Up to 50 per cent of eligible education expenses incurred during the period 1 July 2008 to 30 June 2009 can be claimed. Such claims may be made from 1 July 2009.

The maximum limits of claimable expenses are:

  • $750 for each eligible child in primary school – a refund of up to $375; and,
  • $1,500 for each eligible child in secondary school – a refund of up to $750.

Claimable expenses include internet connections, computers, stationery and text books, but an organisation cannot claim for school fees, school uniforms or school excursions.

Any eligible education expenses that exceed the maximum limit can be carried over to following year, for one year only, as long as the child still meets the eligibility requirements.

For more information, see Education Tax Refund or phone 1300 130 248 between 8 am and 6 pm, Monday to Friday.
