$20M in grants from the Freemasons Foundation Victoria

Freemasons Foundation Victorias announced that since November 2014, it has granted $20 million toward charitable projects improving the lives and opportunities of Victorians. This achievement is due to the generosity of Freemasons and their supporters.

The news of the milestone was shared by FFV Chairman, Garry James, at the annual 1889 Bequest Society Lunch in Melbourne on Friday, 1 March.

James told guests at the event, which is held annually to thank and acknowledge bequestors in their lifetime and bring together key supporters of the Foundation’s work, that the milestone is a testament to their collective impact in communities across Victoria.

“Our collective generosity has built stronger and healthier communities, supported individuals through access to education and aided Freemasons and their dependents in times of need,” said James.

“The $20 million granted by Freemasons Foundation Victoria has been a force for positive change and improvement to the lives and opportunities of Victorians – and a source of support for those who need it most.”

“As a Freemason, I am very proud of being able to make this contribution to a better society, with a better quality of life and more opportunities for many,” he added.

Through its various grant programs and initiatives, the Foundation has been a driving force behind positive change in communities, addressing critical needs, supporting education, fostering health and wellbeing, and responding to emergencies.

Among the highlights are:

$5 million to Masonic Lodge-Initiated Charitable Activities: The Foundation collaborates with local lodges, adding $5 million to their fundraising efforts to support charitable activities in their communities. This collaboration has been instrumental in amplifying the impact of philanthropic efforts.

1,360 Grants: More than 1,360 Community Grants have been distributed, creating meaningful partnerships with not-for-profit organisations dedicated to enriching the lives of Victorians. These grants have supported diverse initiatives, including food and clothing banks; mental health services; educational opportunities for students with low socio-economic backgrounds; improving outcomes for sufferers of prostate cancer; and programs led and devised by First Nations people for enduring change.

$1.5 million in Disaster Relief: In response to emergencies, the Foundation has distributed $1.5 million from the Disaster Relief Fund since 2020. With the support of Freemasons across Victoria, this fund has played a vital role in aiding recovery and reconstruction from bushfires and floods, as well as prevention efforts.

$7 million for Critical Health Needs: Freemasons Foundation Victoria has made a significant contribution toward research and treatment of mental health, prostate, breast and cervical cancer. Additionally, much-needed equipment has been provided to hospitals across the state.

$3.8 million nurturing the leaders of tomorrow: The Foundation has been a staunch supporter of education, awarding 498 Lodge scholarship grants and 1,036 scholarships for continued education in secondary and tertiary years.

“As a Freemason, I am very proud of being able to make this contribution to a better society, with a better quality of life and more opportunities for many,” added James.
