Australian philanthropist Dame Elisabeth Murdoch dies aged 103

She died peacefully at her home at Cruden Farm in Langwarrin, outside of Melbourne.

Murdoch was a passionate supporter and advocate of the arts, academia, medical research, the environment, children and social welfare, and devoted her life to helping others.

She supported over 100 charities and established the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and the Royal Children’s Hospital. Her family are suggesting that those who wish to send flowers instead make a donation to the institute.

Murdoch was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire for her dedicated community work in 1963, was awarded a companion of the Order of Australia and was named Victorian of the Year in 2005.

She was the wife of newspaper publisher Keith Murdoch and the mother of four children, including the Chairman and CEO of News Corporation Rupert Murdoch.
