Grant program launched in WA to combat elder abuse

A grant program has been launched to address elder abuse in regional Western Australia.

With a total funding of $52,500, this initiative seeks to raise awareness of elder abuse and coincide with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on 15 June.

Regional local governments and registered not-for-profit organisations across Western Australia are eligible to apply for grants of up to $3,000. These grants will support initiatives held from the 10th of June to the 30th, focusing on raising awareness of elder abuse. Additionally, metropolitan-based organisations can apply to conduct in-person regional activities.

WEAAD, recognised by the United Nations since 2011, serves as a platform for global solidarity against elder abuse and aims to shed light on the suffering endured by its victims.

Administered by the Northern Suburbs Community Legal Centre, the grants program receives funding from the Department of Communities. The application process, conducted through an open competitive grants process, closes on April 12, 2024.

Minister for Seniors and Ageing Don Punch emphasised the importance of addressing elder abuse, describing it as a complex issue affecting people from diverse backgrounds across Western Australia.

“Elder abuse is a significant issue in our community that has attracted national and local attention, as well as growing momentum for action. It is a complex social, health and human rights issue experienced and carried out by Western Australians of all backgrounds,” he added.

“It is vital that as many people as possible are aware of this significant issue and how and where to access support and information.
