new research

New research from Glen 20’s ‘Can Loneliness, Create Connection’ report, supported by Meals on Wheels, found that almost half (48%) of Australians could be more deeply satisfied with their level of meaningful connection.

For many vulnerable Aussies, Meals on Wheels volunteers provide much-needed support and connection when they need it most by providing a warm meal or a friendly face to share a special memory with.

To celebrate the important contribution volunteers make to Meals on Wheels, the organisation has established the Alison Meighan Awards.

This year Meals on Wheels Alison Meighan Award Winners are:

  • Service Excellence Award Winner: Shire of Coolgardie (WA)
  • Outstanding Contribution Individual Award: Colin Trenouth (SA)

“When I shared the news with my Meals on Wheels branch team, most of them already knew as they had put me forward! It was a very well-kept secret and a lovely surprise to be recognised by the people I work with every day,” said Colin.

Colin began volunteering with Meals on Wheels as a driver/deliverer in 2011, but since 2012 he could be found in the kitchen sometimes 6-7 days a week going above and beyond in his Volunteer Coordinator role.

“I love working with the other volunteers at my branch and particularly love connecting with our customers,” shared Colin.

“The research demonstrated that vulnerable populations are still isolated and want to increase their level of social connection, which we know improves their overall health. I enjoy volunteering with Meals on Wheels as we provide not only a delicious meal, but a friendly face to connect with on a regular basis.”
