Former Young Australian of the Year finalist and founder of charity group Street Swags Jean Madden may have the fraud charge against her changed.

Madden has maintained her innocence since she was charged in July with allegedly misappropriating $441,000 from the homeless welfare charity.

Her lawyer Kris Jahnke told the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday the Director of Public Prosecutions was considering changing the one count of fraud against Madden before her next mention on January 9.

The court heard the DPP was waiting for consultation with police before it amended the charge.

Outside court, Jahnke said the numerous delays in the criminal proceedings against Madden had been frustrating.

“It’s taken its toll on my client but we’re doing everything we can to progress the matter,” Jahnke said.

Madden was the Queensland Young Australian of the Year in 2010 and national finalist on the back of setting up Street Swags.

She founded Street Swags in 2010 to provide the homeless with canvas bags that convert to bedding.
