David Murray AO, Chair, Butterfly Foundation

Murray was a driving force behind the successful transformation of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia as its CEO from 1992 – 2005. His other roles have included the inaugural Chair of both the Future Fund and the International Forum of Sovereign Wealth Funds. He is currently a member of the Oliver Wyman Senior Advisory Board and Senior Advisor at Credit Suisse, Sydney.

In 2001, Murray was awarded the Centenary Medal for service to Australian Society in banking and corporate governance, and was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2007 for his service to the finance sector domestically and globally, and service to the community.

Recently Murray was announced as the Chairman of the Butterfly Foundation – a not-for-profit (NFP) organisation that supports individuals with eating disorders, negative body image and their carers.

He believes that, unlike commercial organisations which continually adapt their business model, a good NFP remains focused on its single cause. Murray suggests that the main goal of a NFP, its Board and Executive team should be to try and solve the issues they are addressing – thus ending the need for the organisation in its original capacity.

In his presentation, Murray will reveal approaches that create long-lasting value, building on the promise that we can ensure the issues we face today will be less likely to confront our children.

Michael Nixon, Individual Donor Fundraising Manager, Australian Red Cross

A professional fundraiser for over ten years, Nixon now manages one of the largest fundraising portfolios in Australia, raising over $43 million in 2012.

Nixon’s approach to fundraising stems from his grass roots experience as a face-to-face fundraiser. Adapting his direct sales experience into the direct marketing space, Nixon was awarded the Association for data-driven marketing and advertising NSW Young Direct Marketer of the Year in 2009.

A driving force behind the Red Cross’ Regular Giving Program, which resulted in an increase of 48,000 donors in one year, Nixon will share how the organisation achieved such rapid growth, the challenges and risks it faced and the strategies it used to overcome them.

Julie Pettett, CEO, Volunteering Western Victoria

Previously CEO of the Conservation Council South Australia, Pettett has held various leadership roles within the Australian and New Zealand education sectors and has acted on the board of various not-for-profit organsiations.

Taking on the leadership role of CEO at Volunteering Western Victoria in 2011,
Pettett has been an influential driver in developing a strategic plan that has set the organisation on the path to long-term success.

As a component of this plan, Pettett has developed the Guiding Governance Program, which aims to improve governance and capacity building at the committee level of management in community organisations. In partnership with the Net Balance Foundation, this program will be piloted in 2013-2014 and rolled out in 2014-2015.

Pettett and Astrid Edwards, Senior Associate at Net Balance, will discuss in detail how the need for this program was identified, how it will revolutionise the way organisations work and how it will be rolled out in the following years.
